Repointing and Tuckpointing Services

Over time, mortar joints can be damaged by harsh weather conditions, especially where excessive amounts of water are present. Continued exposure to water, moisture, or dampness damage solid rock masonry as well as brick and mortar.

Earth Stick & Stone provides excellent Repointing and Tuckpointing concrete services, when renewing the external part of mortar joints is needed. The right repointing technique ensures your brick work will last for decades.

PROFESSIONAL TIP: When extreme weather conditions damage mortar joints, tuckpointing is the most cost-effective method for repairing damaged parts.

Earth Stick & Stone Stops This Destructive Process

In a typical house, we use chisel and hammer to rake the joints clean to an inch deep, making sure not to break the hard fire-skin of the brick. This is essential, so we do not destroy the soft core which is protected by the hard-fine skin. This is an extremely painstaking process. Chiseling and hammering cement-covered joints is even more difficult and time-consuming.

Why Tuckpointing?

It is true that chimney bricks have a century or more lifespan. However, the mortar between the bricks has a shorter lifespan. If the masonry detail is exposed to excessive water and harsh weather conditions, the longest the mortar joints will last is about quarter of a century. Earth Stick & Stone recommends that a ‘cricket’⎯ a compact diversion roof to prevent the chimney from being flooded in rainy conditions ⎯ be installed.
